Wedding Speeches – Here’s How to Put Together An Awesome Wedding Speech

If you have to make speech at an upcoming wedding, you are probably wracking your brain, trying to find just the right words to say what you are thinking about the bride and groom and their future together. Writing and giving a wedding speech is not an easy task. You want to appear confident and you want to give a speech that will be remembered for years to come.

The first thing you will need to do is find inspiration. To do this, you are going to go to the video store and rent every movie you can find with “wedding” in the title: The Wedding Singer, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Father of the Bride, Runaway Bride, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and any others you can think of. Watch these movies to put you in the right frame of mind and as you watch them, jot down ideas you like and don’t like from the speeches made in the films. This will give you a fantastic starting point for your speech.

One great idea taken right from the movies is to incorporate a song into your speech. This works especially well if you don’t want to have to talk too much. If there is a song that reminds you of the couple or has great advice on marriage, you can give a brief introduction about why the song relates to the couple and then play the song for them.

Another tip is to make it personal. A simple, “I’m sure you will be happy together, congratulations and have a great life” isn’t memorable or special to the couple. Use anecdotal stories about the couple to make the guests laugh a little. Talk about the couple’s specific dreams and how you know that together they will make it. If you have known the bride your whole life, talk about how much she means to you and how happy you are for her.

Finally, keep your speech brief. The wedding guests are not there to listen to you talk and you are probably giving your speech while they are waiting for dinner to be served. Keep that in mind! And of course remember the number rule of giving a wedding speech – if you are planning to consume alcohol, wait until after your speech to avoid embarrassing moments for yourself or the happy couple!
